# Menu Design Best Practices

Consider the following best practices and considerations when designing custom menus for your business stakeholders.

## Menu Design Considerations

Consider the following when designing custom [menus](/v1/docs/menus). When configuring a menu, ensure that your business stakeholders have access to each link's location. For example, ensure that business stakeholders have appropriate user and/or group permissions that allow them to access to destinations. Many of the following considerations also pertain to configuring which [URL to redirect a user](/v1/docs/edit-a-user-account#configure-the-homepage-to-redirect-to-a-destination-for-the-user) or [members of a group](/v1/docs/edit-a-group#configure-the-homepage-to-redirect-to-a-destination-for-the-groups-member) when they next log on.

Generally, when a user cannot access a ProcessMaker location or asset, ProcessMaker Platform displays **Unauthorized** to that user.

### Link to Start a Request

Ensure that each user that may access the link that starts a Process's Request is [configured from a Start Event](/v1/docs/start-event#configuration-panel-settings) element to start a Request from its Process.

### Link to a Collection

Ensure that all users/group members that use the menu or redirect to a Collection have the following:

- [Collection permissions](/v1/docs/permission-descriptions-for-users-and-groups#collections), as configured from a user's account or a group
- Access to at least view the records in that Collection, either as [individual users](/v1/docs/configure-a-collection#configure-record-permissions-for-processmaker-users) or as [group members](/v1/docs/configure-a-collection#configure-record-permissions-for-processmaker-groups)

### Link to a Saved Search

Ensure that all users/group members that use the menu or redirect to a Saved Search have been [shared the Saved Search](/v1/docs/create-and-share-a-saved-search#create-and-share-a-saved-search).
